2010 Match Play Champion

This years 2010 Match Play Champion is Paul Hand.

Paul defeated Bob Benefiel, who was the 2009 Match Play Champion. This has been an outstanding year for Paul, as he represented BCGC in the NCGA Zone Tournament, is both the Match Play and the Net Club Championship and is the 2010 Weekend Player of the Year.

According to our historian, Kevin Schultz (Past President) this is the first time in the Weekend Tournament history, that a weekend player has accomplished what Paul Hand has in a single season.

Could Paul be our own Tiger?

Oct 17 & 18, 2010 - Weekend Club Championship

The Weekend BCGC Club Championship results are as follows:

The weather for Saturday was ideal, cool and clear, however Sunday rolled in cold and wet. It rained most of the day. (I am still drying out at this writing, 2 month later). However, Bob Benefiel, Paul Hand and Kevin Schultz brought their 'A' game and played some of the best golf this writer has ever seen under those conditions, I tip my hat to all three. Instead of fighting the wicked rain and wind, they embraced it. Something I will never forget.

MEN
Low Gross Champion - Bob Benefiel 83 - 78 = 161

Net Championship Results :

1st Place - Paul Hand 68-72 =140
2nd Place - Kevin Schultz 73-69= 142
3rd Place - Mark Edgar 67 - 81 = 147
4th Place - Brian Springer 81 - 88 = 169
5th Place - Dave Springer 88 - 97 = 185

This is a repeat for Bob and Paul, both winning the same tournament in 2009. What will they do in 2011???

BCGC Celebrates 15 Years in Style

The Morton Golf Team hosted the 15th Year Celebration with a 7am Scramble Golf Tournament on July 15th. The golf course was in great condition and the weather was perfect. The golf was followed by lunch and wine tasting by 4 local wineries. Kudos to Team Morton for a well run event.

l to r: Lou Edgar, Bart Cavanaugh Jr, John Cavanaugh and Eric Edgar

Bartley Cavanaugh's Son Bart Jr. and Grandson John were one hand watching outstanding play out on course.

The Team of Uncle Frank Giarmona, Dale Achondo Jr, and Dale's two son's won by shooting the lowest round with a 58 (-13). They were followed by former BCGC Club Champion Matt Valli and his team shooting a 59 (-12).

Dale Achondo - Former City of Sacramento Golf Director

Dale Achondo (Former Golf Director and Past BCGC President) spoke about the process in which the golf course became a reality. After Dale finished the Executive 9 Hole Course at Bing Maloney, Dale was charged to build another city golf course. The city discovered and purchased 90 acres in Freeport and proceeded to send out RFP's for golf course design services. Dale mentioned he was very excited when Perry Dye submitted a proposal and somehow know Perry was the right person for the project.

Perry Dye - Golf Course Architect

Perry Dye was also on hand and talked about the project. Perry was informed he had 90 acres to work with, but after his team surveyed the project, he actually had less ground to build on. At that time, Perry stated most courses being built were using approximately 150 acres. He wanted to prove that a challenging golf course could be built using less land. They imported tens of thousands of yards for dirt to build the mounds along the fairways, as this was all flat land just like the property to the south.

From an environmental stand point, Perry was pleased to see all the different types of water fowl and birds now on the course. The course has become home a large variety of wild life. He noted that over the last 15 years, he has brought several different clients to the Bartley Cavanaugh Golf course to view his work.

Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Club members also played in the tournament: Barbara Conerly, Marie Hart, Will Hart, Leon Taylor, Glen Kinion, Mark Edgar, Lou Edgar, Ron McKenna, Kim Volk, Bob Volk and Bob Benefiel.

May 1, 2010 Weekend – Devil Ball

It was a calm and beautiful on morning of May 1, 2010.

Two teams played in the one of the most difficult tournaments all year – The DEVIL BALL. This is by far is one of the pressure packed and funniest too. The pressure of not losing the Devil Ball sometimes seems over whelming. Just ask Bob Benefiel, a 6 Handicapper, past Match Play Champion who on Hole 13 shanked his second devil ball shot right into the lake. In fact, neither team was able to return back to the club house with the Devil Balls.

Devil Ball Results:
Zero, neither team finished with the Devil Ball.

Thanks to everyone that played in the rain, we were soaked, but made for some fun storied in the clubhouse! Closest to the Pin was won by yours truly! :)

Since having some pretty big storms a few weeks back…the course was pretty wet and muddy. A lot of red stakes where the rain had left huge puddles, greens were playing pretty fast (at least that was MY excuse!) The weather was absolutely beautiful, a little chilly in the morning, but then the sun was shining!

An awesome day…cold beers after and fun stories! Can’t wait to do it again next month! Hope to see you out there! Kim

TEE TALK - 1Q10 Edition

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - Mark Edgar

Welcome to both our returning members and new members alike. 2010 promises to be an exciting year for the club, your Board has already had 2 board meetings since the last Christmas Party & General Meeting held in December. Again, I would like to thank Par Mar for her efforts in organizing and coordinating a great Christmas Party.

Your BCGC Board has set 3 Goals for 2010:
  • Expand - exceed 100 members
  • Experience - fun / competitive tournaments / outings
  • Enjoy - relationships & friendships
By the board focusing on these 3 E's, I am positive it will enhance your overall experience at the club. 9th Annual Freeport Cup - We recently met with Land Park G.C., Grips Fast G. C. and Bing Maloney G.C. to work out the details for the Freeport Cup. The date has been set for 8:00am on June 19th at Wild Horse Golf Club, Davis, CA. Past Results: BCGC 3 Wins, GFGC: 3 Wins, and LPGC and BMGC each have one win.

A special thanks to Jim Coombs for all his long hours of work running the Midweek Tournaments during the last couple of years. Shirley Johnson is excited about taking over where Jim left off. Please go out and support her tournaments, as I am sure they will be fun.

Kim Volk will continue on as the Weekend TC, and has been making plans for some new adventures. Talks are underway with Emerald Lakes Golf Club and Bing Maloney Golf Club for a cross town match up. Details to follow….

As with last year, I am very interested in improving your golfing experience. And as your President, I am available for any questions or hear any of your ideas that you may have. You can email me at mark.edgar.architect@gmail.com.

The Hole-In-One Club was started to years ago to build up a account to reward a member in the event of getting a Hole-In-One during a club sponsored event at Bartley Cavanaugh only. It's not to late: If you too have forgotten to send in your $2.00 when you paid your dues, you can include it with any tournament fee to be eligible for the 2010 year. The hole-in-one payout is for 2010 is $200.

Happy Golfing,
Mark Edgar
BCGC President

HANDICAP CHAIR - Barbara Conerly
Welcome to 2010!

Have you noticed….NCGA is now calculating your handicap twice a month. Remember to post all your scores including 9 hole rounds. After each tournament, be sure to double check your scores, provide the date, and ensure the scorer signs the card. The card must also be attested and signed by another golfer in your group. At the end of each tournament turn your scorecards into the Tournament Chair. Make sure not to post your score as the Tournament Chair will take care of all postings.
