October 12th & 19th, 2011 – Midweek - Club Championship

October 12th & 19th, 2011 – MIDWEEK Club Championship Recap

Four women and fourteen men teed it up for a 36 hole club championship battle. The first round was played on a day that got pretty hot and I think it affected most of us since the average net score ballooned to 74.4. Then again, the rough was pretty high too, and this caused more than a few members some trouble. Round Two was completed under fair skies and mild temperatures with the result that the average net score fell to 69.0 even though there were once again many lost ball reports and a lot of grass clippings left on most of the greens.

Low Gross honors went to Trina Millett (168) and Chris Adams (161). Myron Dahl took the Men’s Low Net title shooting a awesome 67-63-130 while the Women’s Low Net went to Barbara Conerly for firing a beautiful 72-69-141. Ed Fierro was Closest to #8 pin in round 1 at 9’8” and Bob Thomas was Closest to Pin on #5 at 11’4” in round 2.

September 21, 2011 – Midweek Group - Medal Play, Net Score

17 Midweek players, including 2 ladies, got together this month competing in a Medal Play, Net Score format. It was another fine day for golf with clear skies and 70 degrees at tee time warming to 92 degrees by the end of our rounds. Once again, it really paid to keep the ball in the fairway. The rough tended to hide balls unless you were right on top of them. The greens were soft and true.

Dick Carlsen shot a beautiful round of 72 gross, 63 net. Jim Coombs and Ed Fierro got closest to pin honors at #12 and #17, respectively. See results, below.

This month we also had an optional skins game with 11 men taking scoring 11 skins: Ed Fierro, 4 skins; Dick Carlsen, Myron Dahl and Ron McKenna each had 2 skins and Dave Springer had 1 skin.

Thank you all for playing. Our final tournament for 2011 will be held on Wednesday, November 16th.

August 17, 2011 – Midweek - Medal Play, Net Score

This month the midweek group fielded 18 players with 17 (3 ladies and 14 men) competing in a Medal Play, Net Score format. It was another fine day for golf with clear skies and 70 degrees at tee time warming to 90 degrees by the end of our rounds. The fairways were the place to be as the rough could be penal in places due to heavy clover hiding balls 3 feet from the short grass. The greens were rolling true and got speedier later in the round.

Shirley Johnson eked out a victory in the women’s flight while Chris Adams and John Hawck won in their respective flights. Chris, by the way, shot a sterling 72 gross, 63 net. I wish I could have been in that group. See below for details. Closest to the pin honors on #17 went to Willard Hart who made it good by sinking his birdie putt on the way to a fine score of 89 (net 67).

Thank you all for playing. Next month’s tournament, starting later now at 9:00 AM on September 20th, will be individual medal play again. Additionally, if anyone is interested in playing a side game of “Last Man Standing”, we could do that at the same time for an additional fee of $1 or $2, winner take all. Let me know soon with your thoughts, pro or con.

July 20, 2011 – Midweek Group - Medal Play, Net Score

This month the midweek group fielded 18 players with 17 (4 ladies and 13 men) competing in a Medal Play, Net Score format. It was a fine day with clear skies and mild AM temperature warming to 92 degrees by the end of our rounds. The fairways and greens were in good shape and the only casual water left was the low spot right of the 1st fairway.

We were all happy to have 4 ladies play with Shirley Johnson low net with a 69. In the men’s A flight, Doug Swann and Dave Springer both shot net 67’s but based on his back nine score, the nod went to Doug. Honors in the men’s B flight went to Ron McKenna with a fine 63. Welcome back Ron! New member, Ed Fierro, who only recently took up the game, was the big winner though, shooting a net 64 for 2nd place men’s B Flight, collecting closest to the pin on #17 in the process.

Thank you all for playing. Next month’s tournament, starting at 8:00 AM on August 17th will be individual medal play again. We had a different game planned but the bulk of the comments I heard were in favor of the straight stroke play tournament after all the early season games. Let me you’re your feelings too. And let’s hope for more nice weather and another nice sized group. Look for the tournament announcement around August 1st.

Men’s A Flight:

The 10th Annual Freeport Cup was played at Land Park Golf Course, Sacramento, Ca. Our host golf club this year was Land Park Men's Club. For the last nine years, the team LP sported Hawaiian Shirts. But this attire has only one victory. So this year, the team put their heads together and all agreed on Black Shirts and to support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

June 15, 2011 – Midweek Group - “Skins”

This month the Midweek Group fielded 18 players with 16 competing in a net skins game. It was a beautiful day for golf with clear skies in the mid-80’s and a steady soft breeze blowing most of the day. The course was in fine shape with good roll-outs on the fairways and receptive greens. Only a few spots of casual water remained here and there after the most recent rains.

Myron Dahl collected the most skins (11-1/3) for $21; Bob Thomas earned 9-1/3 skins for $17 and Marie Hart had 9 skins for $18. No golfer went “skinless” so, over all, it was a good day of competition.

Looking at medal play, Ron McKenna and Myron Dahl tied for low net with a pair of 68’s and new member Chris Adams shot a smooth 78 for low gross of the day.

Thank you all for playing. Next month’s tournament, starting at 8:00 AM on July 20th will be individual medal play. I hope we have more nice weather and another nice crowd show up. And more of our lady members please!

May 18, 2011 Midweek Group Individual

Well Mother Nature tried to discourage the Midweek group again with another rainstorm right up until our first tee time. But then the rain stopped and 12 stubborn BCGC golfers were rewarded with clearing skies, gentle breezes and just a few puddles on the first few holes. We went off with two medal play flights, and one twosome with no handicaps yet playing Bingo-Bango-Bongo. We also welcomed two new members we hope to see more of: Chris Adams and Ed Fierro.

There was a lot of good natured griping put out by the Flight playing from the gold tees (they usually play from the blue) but it did not seem to bother Doug Swann much since he recorded an nice 85 (gross) score, followed by Bob Thomas with a net 69. Mark Edgar played a nice shot to 23’-7” from the gold tee to win CTP at #12. I think all agreed it turned out to be a great day for golf. The fairways and temperatures were fair, the rough was tough and the greens were rolling true.

May 7, 2011 Weekend - 7.5.3.1

It was a beautiful day on the golf course, little cool in the morning but then warmed up for some good golfing!

The format was 7-5-3-1 which means within each group you had an opportunity to score up to 7 points. If you won that hole you would score 7, if you came in second you scored 5, and etc. Some teams came down to the wire, some did not (I might be talking about my foursome) Dave Springer tore it up out there…played awesome golf!

In Group II, Mark Edgar also put a solid round together to out point both George Yaney and Wayne Urbani. George might have beat mark, but somehow kept ending up in some extra rough. On hole 13, it took him 3 hits to get the ball out of the rough.

And in Group III, Glen Kinion won hands down by hitting strong drives with his Cobra.

Here were the standings by group:

GROUP I
Dave Springer: 105 points
Bob Volk: 94 points
Kim Volk: 71 points…see what I mean?

GROUP II
Mark Edgar: 96 points
George Yanez: 89 points
Wayne Urbani: 85 points

GROUP III
Glen Kinion: 92 points
Bob Thomas: 81 points
John Hillerman: 72 points
Dick Jones: 49 points (What happened here? A restricted Index)

Closest to the Pin:
Hole #8 John Hillerman: 5’-6” feet
Hole #12 Glen Kinion: 28’-0” feet

Weather Conditions: Cool to warm , clear skies

Course Conditions: Excellent

Great tournament guys! I am off to Italy and will miss the next tournament on June 5 - SKINS but hope to see everyone next time!

Hit ‘em straight! Ciao!

April 13, 2011 - Midweek - Individual Match Play Against Par

At last! The Midweek Group finally got nice weather on the scheduled tournament date. Alas, only 8 players were on hand to take advantage of mild temperatures, clear skies and a gentle breeze.

Ron McKenna was the overall winner at “6 up.” He probably could have won any game imaginable the way he played with only two holes net bogie or worse on the way to a net 65. Doug Swann was in second place at “2 up” edging Mike McKenna by virtue of a back nine tie breaker. Doug was also low gross for the day shooting an 88.

Haruo Makimoto was closest to the pin on #17 which had a tough front left position on this day. The course had shed all of the standing water nicely in the two weeks since our last tournament and the fairways and greens were both favorable.

GOLF EXPO at Haggin Oaks Saturday Recapp

Another great day out at the Golf Expo by Morton Golf. I met my father Lou Edgar and nephew Ryan Edgar at the Golf Expo today at noon. We proceeded to hit some balls with the new Callaway RAZR Hawk and Octane. Loved them both, BTW, follow this link:

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi61qPILNox-VQZV1dYdJNFhsou5uqsUcJ_LSyQLNKo6vgofQhfDiilgkPfIXoHW13lnV2rQZWyqnyGwZyhpkjU0WVXpBXWZB9OUAre86V71zgargcaaWFf2_9BivZ_bthL2iPNoiZeEBs/s1600/CallawayRAZRcpn1.jpg

Print the coupon and get a free sleeve of balls.

I entered the Sacramento City Putting Championship and was on the bubble all day at 4 under and then got bumped with one of the last guys at 5pm - oh well - next year. If interested in seeing the best locals, the finals are Sunday at 2PM. On the putting green we ran into fellow club member - Kevin Schultz who also noted he liked the Callaway RAZR Hawk.

I has mentioned the Puma / Cobra Tent so I took a picture fo all to see.
Puma has bought the Cobra brand from Titleist, and I think this will be a great partnership. I have been impressed with Cobra and their product pricing, but they seemed to be shadowed by Titleist. This might be just what the brand needed to excel.Next Peter Jacobsen talked about the tour then & now. He talked about his knee and hip replacements and the importance of stretching, which he does every morning.

He remembered his buddy Payne Stewart and their music they played. The discussion that lead to Payne was

a question asked from the audience, "The younger guys on tour seem too focused and with little personality, how do they compare when you played on the PGA". Peter reflected on the colorful players back in the day, Trevino, Fuzzy, Chi Chi and Payne and share a few stories.

He also mentioned the young players today come out of college so well prepared and ready to win, and when he joined the tour, he had to figure it out while on the tour. He attributes this to junior golf programs and the degree of tournament play available today for the youth.

Senior Long Driver Champion Pay Dempsey sent 1-1/2 hours with us today. He shared some of his funny MLG stories. With golf he talked about the importance of balance, position and tempo. He mentioned he gained 5 mph in his swing speed just working on tempo, and for him, that means serious distance.

In addition to balance, position and tempo, he explained how most players think of 'A' (Setup, Take Away, Impact Zone) and how little time is spent thinking about where we finish our swing 'B' and more time spend thinking about the finish position as it will make is a better player. Pat Dempsey took us from the stage to the driving range, where he put on a driving show. He talked, hit, talked, hit, answered questions and then schooled a young fellow and a current local LDA player.
BTW, Pat's longest recorded drive - 475 yards.

And lastly, a special thanks to Morton Golf for their continued commitment on making this event better every year, it is second to no one.

March 30, 2011 - Midweek - Bingo Bango Bongo

Once again, the Midweek group was forced to postpone a planned tournament one week due to some unseasonably wet weather. But disappointment turned to joy because one week later 12 golfers (including one guest) were blessed with clear skies, a light breeze and 76 degree temperature.

The Bingo-Bango-Bongo format seemed to be enjoyed by all since it gives every player a chance to win on every green. Haruo Makimoto and Bob Thomas both collected 18 BBB points and in stroke play, fine rounds were turned in by Roy Fukushima (net 65), Don Mar (66) and Marie Hart (67).

The course looked quite different on some holes due to standing water in places that are usually dry. #2 was shortened to 205 yards with the first 70 yards over water. The left side of #16 was a lake which widened near the green to completely submerge the bunker there turning it into a water hole. Otherwise, fairways and greens were in beautiful shape.

BBB Point Leaders:

  1. Haruo Makimoko.........................18

  2. Bob Thomas.................................18

  3. Doug Swann……………………..…...17

  4. Don Sperling …………….….……....14

  5. Myron Dahl…………………………..14

  6. Roy Fukushima……………………..14

  • Bob Thomas, #12……………….…11’-7”

  • Don Mar, #17………………………..6’10”

Weather:

Temperature: 76 degrees - clear skies

Wind: Light breeze

Course Conditions: Beautiful shape

March 12, 2011 - Weekend Group - Bingo Bango Bongo

Bingo Bango Bongo

The Weekend Group played Bingo Bango Bongo on Saturday under perfect conditions. This is the first time Bingo Bango Bongo has been played on the weekend, and to everyone's surprise, it was a great format. A player can have a bad drive, an OB, a water shot or a topped hit and it really does not matter as all the points happen around the green. Additionally, it does not matter if you have a high HC or a Low HC, this format puts everyone on the same playing field.

Commonly referred to as the as the "Wolf " by his pack. George Yanez out foxed his playing partners Wayne Urbani, Mark Edgar and guest Ed Fierro. George's 3 wood off the tee allowed him the first shot to the green. With the Wolf's sharp approach shots to the green, he dominated getting the points for being "first on the green". Guest Ed Fierro walked away twice with "first on" and "closest to the pin" on two Par 3's. Wayne Urbani finished his round strong by shooting even par on the last 5 holes allowing him to put 7 more points into his pocket. Just off the green on number 11, Mark Edgar chipped up hitting Ed's ball and Mark's ball ricocheted into the hole for two points ("closest to the pin" and "first in").

Why is Mike DePhilippis celebrating?

The answer is Bingo Bango Bongo. We all know what a superstar Bob Benefiel is on and off the golf course, and how he rarely loses his matches. Well Bob's Son-In-Law Mike DePhilippis beat him on Saturday playing BBB. Sources close to the Benefiel family report Bob did not sleep Saturday night as he was putting together a new strategy for next year. It should be noted Mike even beat Bob Olson who shot to his HC with a Net 71. Bob O. later reports, yeah the kid was just too much for us Bobs....

Dave Springer's (R) younger brother Brian Springer (L) was all smiles too, as he out pointed his older brother 17 points to 14. Although Dave outscored Brian, it was Brian's crafty strategy playing BBB that out-did his older brother. As Brian was leaving the clubhouse, he yelled back asking "Can we make this our standard tournament format". Playing in the group was Glen Kinion and Don Sperling. These two men were the only two golfers to break par, Don shot a blistering Net 65 and Glen shot a respectable Net 68.

Format: BINGO, BANGO, BONGO - three types of achievements are rewarded with a point for each:
* BINGO - The first player in a group to get his ball on the green gets a point.
* BANGO - The player in the group whose ball is closest to the pin once all balls are on the green gets a point. The closest-to-the-pin point is only earned once all balls are on the green.
* BONGO - The player in the group who is first to hole out gets a point.

Because of these factors (and because the first person putting will be the one farthest from the hole), strict etiquette must be enforced. The player who is away always plays first.

This will a format added to next years tournament list.

Closest to pin:
1. Mark Edgar, #17 - Blue Flag ....................12-6" (made the birdie)

Course conditions: Overall - fantastic shape!
- Fairways firm
- Greens fast and true

Weather conditions: Ideal

-Skies partially covered then sunny
-Temperature 65
-Wind slight from the south

Midweek Group -Mark Your Calendars for Bingo, Bango, Bongo on March 23rd

The next Midweek Tournament this year is planned for Wednesday, March 23 starting at 9:00 AM. The format will be a variation of Bingo/Bango/Bongo and again, you are encouraged to bring a guest if you desire.

In each foursome, a player can earn a point 3 ways: 1) for striking the first drive to land in the fairway (except for the 4 par-3’s); 2) for hitting the first ball to stick on the green and; 3) for being the first to hole out. That is a maximum of 50 points available to be earned in each group.

Prizes will be awarded based on each individual’s point total. Since there can be no “gimmes” and strict etiquette must be observed regarding the honor and order of play, ready golf is not possible so please keep the pace of play in mind, and above all, keep it fun.

Please call or email me for reservations and mail me a check for $10 per player at the address below. Email and phone info are also below. Hope to see you there.

Feb. 23, 2011 - Midweek Group - 2 Person Best Ball

The Midweek Group kicked off the 2011 golfing season with a slight delay. After having to postpone our first Midweek tournament one week due to cold, rainy weather, 17 golfers, including 5 guests, were rewarded with a great day for our 2011 opener, a member/guest, 2 person, best ball match.

Kent Flewellyn and his guest, Jim DeVard came out on top with a net team score of 60, including a net eagle on the 14th hole! It turned out to be a competitive day with a back-9 tie-breaker necessary to decide 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers.

The course was in great shape after our wet weather, with tee-shots landing in the fairways taking a long roll and the greens holding and putting true. The skies were clear most of the round with light, variable winds and temperature in the mid-fifties. My thanks to all who played after the postponement, especially those who brought a guest!

Net Team Score for the top 4 Teams:

1. Kent Flewellyn/Jim DeVard: 60
2. Roy Fukushima/Don Mar: 62
3. Bob Thomas/Ron McKenna: 62
4. Rich Ferrera/Steve Colwell: 63

Closest to pin:
1. Mike McKenna, #17 ....................3'1"

Course conditions: Overall - great shape!
- Fairways firm
- Greens fast and true

Weather conditions: Good
-Skies clear then partially covered

The team of Bob Volk and Paul Hand won with a team net score of 56 and will be moving on to our NCGA Sectional Qualifier in Sacramento.

The teams of Bob Ruff / Shawn Breakey and Glen Kinion / Lonnie Podgorny were tied for second with net 61's. With the better back 9 score, the Ruff/Breakey team beat them out. It was nice to see some new faces out there…can’t wait until next time!

MORTON GOLF WELCOMES 2011 BCGC MEMBERS

By Dylan Flynn, General Manager

As the sun tries to creep out of the fog and rain, Morton Golf has come up with a very exciting promotion for this year. Juniors play free! That’s right I said free. Your kids, your grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins or even your neighbors, if they are a junior they can play free at the city golf courses this year. With the purchase of a green fee, you can bring a junior along for nothing. All juniors will need to have a junior play card which can be purchased at any of the pro shops.

I look forward to seeing all of you this year playing at the golf course. Campbell, our greens superintendent, has done a wonderful job this winter to keep the course in great condition. With the exception of a few wet spots, the course seems to have weathered the rain and wind well. Greens are in great shape, we are cutting the rough in between the rain so come on out and enjoy some of the best winter conditions in the valley, here at your home course.

Lastly, Morton Golf is setting up a meeting with the club’s officers to collaborate on ways to enhance the home club experience. I look forward to this meeting and I am anticipating some good things to come out of it to provide some value for your membership.

Thank you to those who have renewed and continue to support Bartley Cavanaugh. Your loyalty is appreciated. And to our new members, welcome aboard. I look forward to meeting you and having you out at the facility.

Happy New Year!

Dylan Flynn
General Manager

TEE TALK - 1Q11 Edition

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
By Mark Edgar, President

Welcome back to all our returning BCGC Members and to all our new members. I know you have many options with regards to joining other local golf clubs, but I feel you have made the right choice. Your BCGC Board is very eager to make this a very special year and is dedicated to delivering to you the best possible golfing experience. Last year Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course celebrated it's 15th year as a Sacramento area Golf Course and our golf club has been around since the beginning. Take note, your club is one of the few clubs that is mixed with both men and women.

I would like to thank our returning Board Members: Jeri Fong, Don Sperling, Barbara Conerly, Pat Mar, Kim Volk and Kevin Schultz. And welcome our new Board Members Marie & Will Hart, Bob Thomas and Bob Benefiel. Without the hard work and continued dedication by these individuals, I am sure where we would be. Thanks for all you do for the club and the game of golf. Also, I would like to thank our departing 2010 Board Member's Shirley Johnson, Bob Volk and Jason Mangels.

As with 2010, the BCGC Board’s goals will continue with the 3 E’s during 2011:

* Expand - exceed 100 members
* Experience - fun / competitive tournaments / outings
* Enjoy - relationships & friendships

Our 2011 Tournaments will be centered on friendly competiton and fun new formats allowing the scores to be posted. Kim Volk and Bob Thomas have a few tricks up their sleeves and I am sure you will not be disappointed. The 10th Annual Freeport Cup has been briefly discussed, but nothing has been firmed up at this time. As you may recall, Grips Fast has won 4 times, BCGC has won 3 times and Bing & Land have each won twice.

Lastly, I have been in touch with Dylan Flynn, General Manager at Bartley, and we are scheduling a meeting in the next few weeks to discuss ways, in which we can partner, add value and better serve our membership. I strongly feel our club provides a steady revenue stream to both the City and Morton Golf. And that our club’s success is beneficial to both the City and Morton Golf.

Tee it UP High and Let it Fly,
Mark Edgar

MIDWEEK GROUP
By Bob Thomas, Midweek Tournament Chairperson

Happy Golfing New Year to all BCGC members. I am Bob Thomas, this season’s Tournament Chair. The schedule dates and tournament formats have been set for the year so we can all clear our calendars for the important stuff. The first tournament is February 16th and it will be a member/guest that will hopefully attract some new members. As an added incentive, members who bring a guest will earn extra points toward player of the year honors.

My goal is to plan a fun game each month that will still allow our scores to be posted. Check out our website and the Bartley Cavanaugh bulletin board for full description of the dates, games, times, fees, etc. We are also planning some kind of a competition with the BCGC Weekenders that will be points based and tabulated using results of one or more of each club’s regular monthly tournaments just to add a little spice to our game.

If you have questions or comments about any of the games or other midweek tournament matters, please contact me as follows:

JUST SO YOU KNOW
By Barbara Conerly, Handicap Chairperson

POSTING YOUR SCORE

* Post scores from home and away courses.

* Post scores in all forms of play; match play, stroke play, even team competitions in which you are requested to pick up.

* Post your score when you play at least 13 holes out of 18 holes or at least 7 out of 9 holes.

* On the holes you didn’t play, record par plus any handicap strokes you would have received.

* Post a score if you play two nines even if it’s the same nine or nines from different days. Simply combine the nines into an 18-hole score. Add each nine-hole Course Rating together and average the Slope Ratings.

* Post scores played in an area observing an active season even when your home club is in a inactive season.

DO NOT POST THESE SCORES

* Do not post BCGC tournament scores. The handicap chairperson will do the honors.

* Do not post your score if you played fewer than 7 holes.

* Do not post your score when you play in a competition limiting the types of clubs used, such as a one-club or irons-only tournament.

* Do not post your score when an 18-hole course is less than 3.000 yards, or when a majority of the holes aren’t played under the Rules of Golf, as in a “scramble”.

* Do not post scores made in area observing an inactive season.

Sincerely,

Barbara Conerly
Handicap Chairperson
