"Golf in the City" http://hagginoaks.blogspot.com/

Jennifer Morton manages this site, and she does a great job keeping it up to date with what is happening with Morton Golf. February 15, 2012 - Midweek Group - 2 Person Member - Guest

Happy New Year to All from Bob Thomas, Midweek Tournament Chair

The tournament Schedule for the BCGC Midweek group is set so you can save these dates on your calendar. If you have not yet renewed your membership for this year, there is still time.

Our first tournament will be a Member-Guest match play with 2 person teams on February 15th, first tee at 9:22 AM. If you are one of our new members, welcome to the club. The rest of the schedule is loaded with many more fun games, so make your plans early.

And this year I plan to offer an optional summer lesson series June through September on the Wednesday immediately prior to each of our scheduled tournaments. This would be a one hour group lesson each month in putting, chipping, bunker play and full swing, taught at Bing Maloney by one of Morton's instructors. Depending on the number of students, the cost would be between $10 and $20 per session. Please let me know if you might like to attend one or more of these lessons, so I can gauge the amount of member interest before finalizing any plans.

As always, suggestions are welcome. Let me know, too, if you are unable to read the schedule attachements.

BCGC is Certified as an "Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program"

Another great venture for Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course in 2009 was the certification process was finished for Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP). Doug Parker, Capital City golf manager, and Superintendent Campbell Turner began this process back in December of 2007.
The ACSP program provides an advisory service to help the golf course develop effective conservation and wildlife enhancement programs. One of the projects that have been completed is the placing of nesting boxes located next to the Gazebo off the ninth and eighteenth greens.
Another area is a small triangle section of land to the right of the fourth green and the right of the 5th white tee box that has been designated for low maintenance as an effort to help maintain cover for our nesting wildlife.
All certificate’s are posted on the information board for the public to see. Campbell Turner and his staff did a fantastic job making this process as seamless as possible.

If you would like any more information on Audubon International and the ACSP, please visit the webpage @ http://www.acspgolf.auduboninternational.org/.

Sincerely,

Dylan Flynn
General Manager, Morton Golf

Editor's Note: All of the bird pictures above were taken on the Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course. And of course, these TWO WILD TURKEYS were not harmed on the course.

Feb. 4, 2012 - Weekend - Member / Guest or Member / Member

Bob Benefiel, Weekend Tournament TC

I'd like to wish a Happy New Golfing Year to everyone!

The first Weekend Tournament will be held on Saturday, February 4 and will be Member/Guest or Member/Member. The format will be 6-holes Net Best Ball, 6-Holes Scramble, 6-Holes Scotch. For players without an established handicap, a modified Callaway system will be used. The first starting time is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. If you invite a guest, please urge them to join our club!

For this tournament, if possible, please send your entries ($10 per person - checks payable to BCGC) to me by Friday, January 27th. Doing so will help facilitate arranging our starting times and pairings in advance, and save me a lot of confusion on tournament day (as I am easily confused!) When sending your entry, please include the GHIN of your guest. Email entries are acceptable as well, just remember to send me your entry fee(s) in advance of the tournament.

The remaining tournaments on our schedule this year will be of a format where you play your own ball for the entire round, therefore making it a postable score for NCGA handicap purposes. Tournament formats will vary, however. I plan to add a new wrinkle to these subsequent tournaments. In addition to our regular tournament formats, we will have a side Skins game. Participation in the Skins game will be optional. It should be a lot of fun!

As I assume the Tournament Chair duties, I'd like to thank Kim Volk for all of her past patience and hard work, and especially for the time that she carved out of her family life for us. As we all know, family comes first. Kim, and her husband Bob, are very loving and dedicated parents.

Thank you! And let's make this a terrific golfing year!

Art In Public Places

Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course has two pieces of art intregated into the Golf Course and Club House as part of the City's "Art in Public Places" program.

The following is taken from the Grand Opening Program dated July 20-23, 1995:

The artist team Jeffrey Reed from Oakland and Kathleen Kasper-Noonan of Carmichael created two sculptural works of art for the golf course. Reed's project consists of five poured in place concrete benches sited in various locations throughout the course. Reed is an artist with a degree in architecture and has a general contractor's license.

The slate and stone mural by Kasper-Noonan was installed in the lobby of the clubhouse. Noonan is a successful local artist whose works can be seen at the Downtown Plaza, Natomas Station, and the 39th Street Light Rail Station.

The slate and stone mural is really nine individual pieces of art, with each representing parts of nature. Refer to the picture below to see what each piece represents.

Or the next time your at the club take time to give it a second look.
