2013 Christmas Party and Award Presentations

2013 BCGC Board of Directors
Will, Bob, Bob, Santa, Jeri, Barbara, Marie, Pat and Don

Pat Mar, Marie Hart and Will Hart have put on another amazing Christmas Party for our membership on December 4, 2013.  The food was delicious and the conversation was delightful.  We even had a special guest appearance by Old Saint Nick.

Marie says: "Over here Will, I see someone who wants more raffle tickets."
Bob Benefiel and Bob Thomas provided a recap of the tournament season and presented the Championship Awards:
Jim Coombs and Dave Springer
Midweek Club Champions

Marie Hart and Barbara Conerly
Midweek Club Champions

Bob Benefiel and David Leuterio
Weekend Club Champions

The "Winning" Leuterio Family
David: Club Champion, Greg:  Match Play Champion & Player of the Year - Weekend

President, Mark Edgar provided a overview of the club and the following are some of his highlights:

As president, his Top 5 indicators of a healthy club are:

Board of Directors: Is the Board of Directors stable?  Yes, it is stable.  Many board members have held positions since the beginning of the club.  And he encourged anyone wanting to join the next board to step up and let the current board know.

Membership:  Is the membership going up or down?  Our membership is up 16% from 82 in previous years to 95 in 2013.  (27 New & 68 Returning)

Tournament Participation:  Is tournament participation trending up or down?  Both the Midweek Group and Weekend Group tournament participation is up from previous years.  From a membership perspective, he notes players are enjoying each others company after the matches are over and strong attendance at the annual Christmas Parties, both are signs of a healthy club.

Finances / Budget: Are we finacially strong?  Yes, we are forecasting to land the budget where we started the year, right around $1,000. This has been our goal for the last 5 years and we have been successful in doing so.

Membership Participation:  Are members having fun and enjoying their time spent at the club?Yes, from a membership perspective, he notes players are enjoying each others company after the matches are over.   As a matter of fact, many members continue to have pick up games outside of scheduled tournament dates.  Plus we have a strong attendance at the annual Christmas Parties, all are signs of a healthy club and members are having fun.

Mark then talked a golf:

Freeport Cup:  In June, BCGC won it's 5th Freeport Cup Title, now tied with Grips Fast (5), followed by Land Park & Bing Maloney (1 each)

Bing Maloney:  Bing has expressed interest in combining some weekend tournaments with BCGC to increase tournament participation during 2014.

Land Park Ladies:  During 2013, we joined the ladies for a Ice Breaker Tournament last January and plans are in the works for another ion January 18, 2014.

Kathy Leuterio was kind enough to take more than 150 pictures from the event. You can follow this link to see pictures that night: http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8AZMmzhu5buFNXI. Thank you Kathy.

Happy Holidays Days and Cheers to All!

November 20, 2013 - Midweek Group Tournament Results

Well, I guess it had to happen. They say “into every life a little rain must fall” and that’s what happened to the Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Club’s Midweek Group at our 2013 Turkey Shoot. We had 29 members signed up for an event with great prizes for everyone and instead it rained all the previous day and through the night. Tournament day was overcast and misty and the course was open but “cart path only” was in effect. This of course is not doable for some of our group and the cold, damp weather promised to be no fun for others of us.

Fortunately, after a nice breakfast shared with 16 members, 12 decided to try our luck and were rewarded with pretty good conditions for 18 holes. I didn’t even need the extra towel I brought to keep the seat in the cart dry!

The McKenna Brothers (Mike & Ron)
The format for this tournament was a Stableford Points game. In the Men’s B Flight, Mike McKenna turned in the performance of the day firing his all-time best BCGC round of 91, net 67 and scoring 32 points to come in fist place. It was fun to watch with two net eagles! Bob Thomas and Ron McKenna took second and third place honors with 22 and 16 points, respectively.

In the Men’s A Flight, Dave Schutt came out with the win shooting a beautiful 83, net 67 scoring 30 Stableford points. Haruo Makimoto came in second with 26 points (85, net 68) and Jim Coombs was third with 25 points (88, net 69). And in the Women’s Flight, Joyce Makimoto and Kuniko Takeuchi tied with 14 points each.

There was a "Closest to Pin" competition held at hole #’s 5 and 17. At #5, Mike McKenna (39’-8”) and Dave Springer (11’-7”) took the honors for their respective flights. At #17, Bob Thomas (23’-9”) and Jim Coombs (12’-6”) won their flights.

We also had an optional skins game with 7 golfers scoring 6 net skins: Mike McKenna’s eagle 2’s at #9 and #16; and birdies by Haruo Makimoto at #1, Dave Springer at #6, Thomas at #10 and Dave Shutt at #13. Good shooting all of you on a cold, dreary day made fun by golfing with friends.

October 19 & 20, 2013 - Weekend Club Championship

It’s interesting how the most important golf tournaments bring out the best golf in the best player.  That fact was evident in this year’s BCGC Weekend Club Championship.  This year’s Gross Club Champion, Dave Leuterio, shot the lowest two-round total in the history of Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Club.  Dave’s gross score rounds of 67 – 71 (138) easily beat out his next-nearest competitor, four-time Gross Champion, Bob Benefiel who shot rounds of 73 – 74 (147).  Dave’s first round of 67 featured five birdies, one bogey and 12 pars.  His second round was very consistent with two birdies, two bogies, and 14 pars.     Great shooting Dave!  You are a very deserving Club Champion!

Bob Benefiel / David Leuterio
(Net Champion) / (Gross Champion)

Although Bob Benefiel failed in gaining his fifth consecutive Gross Club Championship, he did play consistent enough to win the Weekend Net Club Championship with net rounds of 68 – 69 (137).  Winning the Net Championship was not an easy task however, as Bob and Dave’s father, Greg Leuterio, were tied with net scores of 68 after the first round.  Bob managed three consecutive birdies on #’s 11, 12 & 13 to wrestle the Net Championship from Greg who shot a net second round total of 72.  Third place Net went to Dave Schutt with rounds of 72 – 72 (144).  Fourth place Net went to Steve Ackley 79 – 66 (145) who tied with Dante Drake 69 – 76 (145) but won based on a tie-breaking-match of scorecards.

October 9th & 16th, 2013 - Midweek Club Championship Results

Our annual Club Championship for the midweek players was held October 9th and 16th with 36 holes of individual stroke play competition. The weather smiled on us for both days with cool morning temperatures warming to the low eighties with clear, calm skies. The course was playing tough with speedy greens and tricky pin positions both days. Many thanks are due to the Bartley Cavanaugh maintenance and pro staff for their hospitality and course conditions all year.

For our lady members, Marie Hart played beautifully on the last round firing a 104-92/196 to earn low gross honors and Barbara Conerly went low in the first round to take low net with a nice 67-75/142. Rounding out the top four, Kuniko Takeuchi took 2nd place in a last round tie-breaker over 3rd place Joyce Makimoto, both shooting 151 and Jean Chong came in 4th with a net of 155.

On the men’s side, Dave Springer shot a personal best 75 in round one and hung on with a second round 89, 164 total to beat Haruo Makimoto by one stroke to take low gross honors for 2013. Two other members excelled in round one, Leon Taylor’s 75 and Jim Coombs’ 78. Fine shooting by all of you. In the low net competition, Jim Coombs shot a blistering 60 on the first day and followed that with a smooth 72 to take the low net championship this year with a 132. Ron McKenna followed a 1st round 70 with an clutch 63 for a 133 total to edge Leon Taylor’s 58-75/133 by virtue of a last round tie-breaker to take 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Haruo Makimoto’s 64-70/134 took 4th place and John Hawck garnered 5th place honors with a steady 69-68/ 137 he can be proud of. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners, your performance has earned you all twice the normal Player of the Year points for your positions.
Looking ahead, our final tournament this year will be held on November 20th, first tee at 9:00 (format undecided) and our annual Christmas party for members will be held at 6PM on December 4th. Expect an Invitation to the party shortly, but you can mark your calendars now for a nice dinner with friends and Player of the Year awards, Club Champion trophy presentations and lots of more fun to be had. Look for “Turkey Shoot” tournament invitations in your e-mail around November 1st.

Thanks again to all of you who participated in our club championship.

September 18, 2013 - Midweek Group Tournament Results

On September 18th the BCGC Midweek Group , 26 in all, met to compete in a stroke play tournament. The weather, except for some gusty winds, was really nice with pretty skies and mild temperatures. The course was in good shape thanks to some heavy watering which managed to find low spots off the fairway.

In the Men’s A flight, Haruo Makimoto led the pack with an 84/net 67, followed closely by Dave Springer (86/70) and Doug Swann (87/71).

In the Men’s B flight, Roy Fukushima was low man shooting 96, net 68, nosing out Ron McKenna (98/70) and Don Sperling (108/73).

On the softer side, the ladies flight was led by Barbara Conerly’s net 71, besting Jean Chong’s net 74 and Joyce Makimoto’s net 75.

In the "Closest to Pin" competition, the winners were as follows:
Men’s A Men’s B Ladies

#12: Dick Jones (11’-7”) Manny Jauregui (10’-6”) Joyce Makimoto (31’)
#17 Dick Carlson (14’-7”) Ron McKenna (7’-5”) Kuniko Takeuchi (36’)

In the optional skins game, 10 members got in the game and there were 7 skins made: Glen Kinion got 3 skins at #3 (3), #11 (4), and #14 (3); Don Sperling scored 2 skins at #8 (2) and #17 (1); and Haruo Makimoto and Ron McKenna each scored a skin at #10 (3) and #12 (1), respectively.
Next month we have scheduled our annual Club Championship, a 36 hole tournament to be staged on the 9th and 16th of October. More on that soon, but mark your calendars for sure. You must play both days, paying in advance.

Hope to see you there,

August 14, 2013 - Midweek Group Tournament Results

"Mr. 62" Myron Dahl

On August 14th, 16 members of Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Club teed it up for an 18 hole stroke play tournament. The weather was nice, not too hot, with a slight breeze. The course was in good shape, but with all the necessary watering, our 7:30 starting time landed us in some wet conditions with some tall clover if one strayed from the fairway at all.

Myron Dahl must not have strayed too often, shooting a sweet 80 (62 net!!) to take the honors in the Men's A group. Dave Springer had a nice round too, coming in 2nd place firing an 83, net 65. Leon Taylor came in third shooting an 86, net 68.

In the Men's B flight, Ron McKenna shot 95, net 67, followed by John Hawck, 97/68 and Mike McKenna at 92/69.

For the ladies, Jean Chong continued her winning ways with a net 77 and Joyce Makimoto came in second scoring a net 78. Good shooting from all of you, thanks. And thanks for your understanding when, due to late scratches, it became necessary to shuffle the advertised pairings to avoid sending out singles. For those of you not around to collect your winnings, I will save them for you until next time, or mail them to you later.

In the optional skins game, Myron Dahl's net 1 on #12 scored him one, Roy Fukushima's net 2 on #16 was another, and Bob Thomas's net 1 on #17 and net 2 on #18 earned him two skins. There were eight players in the game for these 4 skins.

There was a "Closest to Pin" contest at #17 also. This was won by Leon Taylor for the A flight with a distance of 20'-9" and Bob Thomas for the B flight at 5'-11". None of the ladies were eligible this time, sorry.

Next month, our Midweek group will play on the 18th, first tee at 8:03 AM. More on that around the first of the month. Thanks again to all of you.
