October 19 & 20, 2013 - Weekend Club Championship

It’s interesting how the most important golf tournaments bring out the best golf in the best player.  That fact was evident in this year’s BCGC Weekend Club Championship.  This year’s Gross Club Champion, Dave Leuterio, shot the lowest two-round total in the history of Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Club.  Dave’s gross score rounds of 67 – 71 (138) easily beat out his next-nearest competitor, four-time Gross Champion, Bob Benefiel who shot rounds of 73 – 74 (147).  Dave’s first round of 67 featured five birdies, one bogey and 12 pars.  His second round was very consistent with two birdies, two bogies, and 14 pars.     Great shooting Dave!  You are a very deserving Club Champion!

(Net Champion) / (Gross Champion)

Although Bob Benefiel failed in gaining his fifth consecutive Gross Club Championship, he did play consistent enough to win the Weekend Net Club Championship with net rounds of 68 – 69 (137).  Winning the Net Championship was not an easy task however, as Bob and Dave’s father, Greg Leuterio, were tied with net scores of 68 after the first round.  Bob managed three consecutive birdies on #’s 11, 12 & 13 to wrestle the Net Championship from Greg who shot a net second round total of 72.  Third place Net went to Dave Schutt with rounds of 72 – 72 (144).  Fourth place Net went to Steve Ackley 79 – 66 (145) who tied with Dante Drake 69 – 76 (145) but won based on a tie-breaking-match of scorecards.

October 9th & 16th, 2013 - Midweek Club Championship Results

Our annual Club Championship for the midweek players was held October 9th and 16th with 36 holes of individual stroke play competition. The weather smiled on us for both days with cool morning temperatures warming to the low eighties with clear, calm skies. The course was playing tough with speedy greens and tricky pin positions both days. Many thanks are due to the Bartley Cavanaugh maintenance and pro staff for their hospitality and course conditions all year.

For our lady members, Marie Hart played beautifully on the last round firing a 104-92/196 to earn low gross honors and Barbara Conerly went low in the first round to take low net with a nice 67-75/142. Rounding out the top four, Kuniko Takeuchi took 2nd place in a last round tie-breaker over 3rd place Joyce Makimoto, both shooting 151 and Jean Chong came in 4th with a net of 155.

On the men’s side, Dave Springer shot a personal best 75 in round one and hung on with a second round 89, 164 total to beat Haruo Makimoto by one stroke to take low gross honors for 2013. Two other members excelled in round one, Leon Taylor’s 75 and Jim Coombs’ 78. Fine shooting by all of you. In the low net competition, Jim Coombs shot a blistering 60 on the first day and followed that with a smooth 72 to take the low net championship this year with a 132. Ron McKenna followed a 1st round 70 with an clutch 63 for a 133 total to edge Leon Taylor’s 58-75/133 by virtue of a last round tie-breaker to take 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Haruo Makimoto’s 64-70/134 took 4th place and John Hawck garnered 5th place honors with a steady 69-68/ 137 he can be proud of. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners, your performance has earned you all twice the normal Player of the Year points for your positions.
Looking ahead, our final tournament this year will be held on November 20th, first tee at 9:00 (format undecided) and our annual Christmas party for members will be held at 6PM on December 4th. Expect an Invitation to the party shortly, but you can mark your calendars now for a nice dinner with friends and Player of the Year awards, Club Champion trophy presentations and lots of more fun to be had. Look for “Turkey Shoot” tournament invitations in your e-mail around November 1st.

Thanks again to all of you who participated in our club championship.
