March 13, 2013 – Midweek Group - Bingo-Bango-Bongo

Thanks to all 26 members and one guest who participated in the Midweek Group's March Tournament. The weather was fantastic and the course was in great shape although the greens were not as fast and smooth as in February. The format was Bingo-Bango-Bongo and I heard some kudos and some complaints so if any of you would like to be heard in this regard, let me know your thoughts and I will consider them all when planning next years' games. For the most part, there were no big winners.

In the Closest to the Pin competition, the results were as follows:

In the optional net skins game, there were 15 participants scoring 6 skins. Don Sperling won two skins scoring a net zero at #8 and net 2 at #10. Bob Thomas, scored a 2 at #9, Myron Dahl a net 1 at #12 and Dave Travis and Richard Coakley shot 2's at #13 and #14 respectively.

Men's and women's Player of the Year Points will be awarded based on adjusted net scores. I will include a POY standings sheet with next month's recap letter as we will by then by a quarter of the way through the year. Our next tournament will be the 2nd Wednesday, the 13th of April starting at 9AM. I hope to see you all there. Thanks again for playing and for your feedback.

March 9, 2013 - Weekend Group - Individual Net and Match Play Qualifier

 

First of all, I wish to welcome and thank the new members who played on Saturday, and congratulate them on having the courage to stick around through the golf and the gathering afterward and experience the camaraderie that makes our club a fun group.  Those new members are; Dante Drake, Kevin Granderson, Keith Felte, Richard Sanchez, Rod DelNero, and Dave Travis.  Welcome gentlemen!  I hope we didn’t scare you away from future tournaments!

Tournament Results:

On Saturday, March 9, 2013 a field of 23 players braved the breezy conditions on this day that the north wind blew.   It was also a day that Bob Olson blew away the field with his best round ever round, gross 84 (net 65) to capture first place in the Individual Net tournament.  It also positioned him as the number one seed in the BCGC Match Play Championship.  Olson out-distanced Bob Benefiel who shot nines of 39-34, gross 73 (net 67).   

Rounding out the field of 16 for the Match Play Championship are:

The Match Play Bracket will be posted soon on the BCGC blog-site.  Match Play will begin in April at times agreed upon by the respective opponents, with subsequent matches concluding on, or before, September 15, 2013.  The Match Play Champion will be crowned at the 2013 Christmas Party in December.

Other Individual Net tournament results:  Prizes were paid through sixth place in the tournament.

     Hole #17 – Bob Benefiel  - 7’2”

For those of you who don’t know this fact, Bob Olson and Bob Benefiel are brother-in-laws.  Now Benefiel is going to have to put up with the constant reminders from his “favorite” brother-in-law at all future family gatherings until the day he can gain revenge!

The next Weekend Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 20th.  This tournament will be a 2-Man Best Ball as well as on optional NCGA 4-Man Net qualifier.  Get yourself a partner (must be a fellow BCGC member), and come out and have some fun!

Feb. 13, 2013 - Midweek - Member/Guest

The first tournament of the year for the Midweek Group was held on February 13th under fair skies with calm winds and temperatures in the 60's. Quite a start for this time of year!

We also had a nice turnout for the member/guest ice-breaker with 26 players including 7 new members and 3 guests. Thanks to all of you. In the "A" flight, Dick Carlsen and Leon Taylor teamed for a hard fought victory over the team of Greg Fletcher and Ron Glick. The Fletcher/Glick team started out with eagle/birdie on 1 & 2 on the way to a 34-37-71 (net 66), but the stubborn Carlsen/Taylor team hung on to tie, firing a 35-37-72 (net 66.) The back-nine tie-breaker (using strokes where they fall) was won by Carlsen and Taylor (net 34 to net 35!!) Fine golf by both sides. Third place in "A" flight went to the team of Dave Springer and Divid Rivas with a net 67.

First place in the "B" flight went to the team of Haruo Makimoto and Roy Fukushima with a beautiful round of 36-37-73, net 63. Second place was decided by a last-nine tie-breaker with the team of Jean Chong and Gloria Parrott edging the team of Mike and Ron McKenna as both teams finished with net 66's. For those of you interested in the complete results, I have attached .pdf and .doc files for your use.

Closest to Pin contest on #8 was won by Richard Coakley at 28'-11". Haruo Makimoto was closest to pin on #17 at 9'-3". Once again the course was playing beautiful with firm, green fairways, manageable rough and receptive greens that putted true.

Thanks to you all for participating, especially you new members and those of you who brought guests. The next tournament will be March 13th and will be individual stroke play with scores suitable for posting, as will all ten rounds remaining for the year.

For those of you who can play on weekends, keep an eye out for the next weekend tournament announcement from Bob Benefiel. That tournament will be held March 9th and will count as one of the NCGA qualifiers and it doubles as a qualifer for our own BCGC Match Play Championship.

Feb. 9, 2013 - Weekend Member/Guest & Member/Member (6-6-6)

The BCGC 2013 Golfing Season opened this morning with a bang, 22 members and guests played in the 6-6-6.  The tournament format was a 2 person team, with flights of member/guest and member/member.  The first six holes were played as a Scramble followed by 6 holes of No Scotch and the last six holes were played as a Best Ball.

Our golf course GM, Dylan Flynn was out on the greens today measuring the speed of the greens, which measured 10.5, a reading of 1.0 faster than a normal and boy could you tell the difference.  I think it took several holes to get use to the faster speed, as putts continued to end up past the hole.  the golf course was in great condition, it was a sunny 60 plus day, with a slight wind out of the north.

ICE BREAKER - Jan 19, 2013

On a cold frozen (Frost Delayed) January morning, 12 Land Park Ladies joined 10 BCGC members for little game of Devil Ball.  This day turned out to be an awesome day, the sun came out and warmed us up, and the teamed competition was crazy fun.  Each team had players from both clubs, and from the text messages after the tournament, I would say everyone have a great time.
