September 18, 2013 - Midweek Group Tournament Results

On September 18th the BCGC Midweek Group , 26 in all, met to compete in a stroke play tournament. The weather, except for some gusty winds, was really nice with pretty skies and mild temperatures. The course was in good shape thanks to some heavy watering which managed to find low spots off the fairway.

In the Men’s A flight, Haruo Makimoto led the pack with an 84/net 67, followed closely by Dave Springer (86/70) and Doug Swann (87/71).

In the Men’s B flight, Roy Fukushima was low man shooting 96, net 68, nosing out Ron McKenna (98/70) and Don Sperling (108/73).

On the softer side, the ladies flight was led by Barbara Conerly’s net 71, besting Jean Chong’s net 74 and Joyce Makimoto’s net 75.

In the "Closest to Pin" competition, the winners were as follows:
Men’s A Men’s B Ladies

#12: Dick Jones (11’-7”) Manny Jauregui (10’-6”) Joyce Makimoto (31’)
#17 Dick Carlson (14’-7”) Ron McKenna (7’-5”) Kuniko Takeuchi (36’)

In the optional skins game, 10 members got in the game and there were 7 skins made: Glen Kinion got 3 skins at #3 (3), #11 (4), and #14 (3); Don Sperling scored 2 skins at #8 (2) and #17 (1); and Haruo Makimoto and Ron McKenna each scored a skin at #10 (3) and #12 (1), respectively.
Next month we have scheduled our annual Club Championship, a 36 hole tournament to be staged on the 9th and 16th of October. More on that soon, but mark your calendars for sure. You must play both days, paying in advance.

August 14, 2013 - Midweek Group Tournament Results

"Mr. 62" Myron Dahl

On August 14th, 16 members of Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Club teed it up for an 18 hole stroke play tournament. The weather was nice, not too hot, with a slight breeze. The course was in good shape, but with all the necessary watering, our 7:30 starting time landed us in some wet conditions with some tall clover if one strayed from the fairway at all.

Myron Dahl must not have strayed too often, shooting a sweet 80 (62 net!!) to take the honors in the Men's A group. Dave Springer had a nice round too, coming in 2nd place firing an 83, net 65. Leon Taylor came in third shooting an 86, net 68.

In the Men's B flight, Ron McKenna shot 95, net 67, followed by John Hawck, 97/68 and Mike McKenna at 92/69.

For the ladies, Jean Chong continued her winning ways with a net 77 and Joyce Makimoto came in second scoring a net 78. Good shooting from all of you, thanks. And thanks for your understanding when, due to late scratches, it became necessary to shuffle the advertised pairings to avoid sending out singles. For those of you not around to collect your winnings, I will save them for you until next time, or mail them to you later.

In the optional skins game, Myron Dahl's net 1 on #12 scored him one, Roy Fukushima's net 2 on #16 was another, and Bob Thomas's net 1 on #17 and net 2 on #18 earned him two skins. There were eight players in the game for these 4 skins.

There was a "Closest to Pin" contest at #17 also. This was won by Leon Taylor for the A flight with a distance of 20'-9" and Bob Thomas for the B flight at 5'-11". None of the ladies were eligible this time, sorry.

Next month, our Midweek group will play on the 18th, first tee at 8:03 AM. More on that around the first of the month. Thanks again to all of you.

August 10, 2013 - BCGC Weekend Tournament Results

"Mr. 64" David Schutt with Bob Benefiel

Saturday, August 10, 2013, turned out to be a very comfortable day as the marine-layer burned off in the morning to give us a very pleasant day in the mid 80’s.  It turned out to be a very comfortable day as well, especially for a couple of players participating in the Individual Net/NCGA Net Amateur qualifier.

Low score for the day was turned in by Dave Schutt who shot a gross 80 (39-41) – net 64.  Dave bested second-place finisher Glen Kinion who shot a gross 92 – net 67.  Dave’s game is obviously coming around as he shot a career-best 79 in June at Bing Maloney during the Freeport Cup.  If Dave keeps posting those kinds of rounds, we’re all going to be asking him for strokes in the future!  Nice round, Dave!

Low score for the NCGA Net Amateur qualifier was turned in by Steve Ackley who shot a gross 85 (43-42) – net 68.  Steve finished in front of his closest competitor in the qualifying event, Bob Benefiel who shot a gross 78 – net 71.  Steve now will continue on to the NCGA Sectional Qualifier on September 12, 2013.

July 17, 2013 - Midweek Group Tournament Results

This month, 24 members teed off in our Wednesday group's 7/17 tournament under cool, clear skies with a slight breeze. Starting at 7:30 during the summer, we all finished by 1 PM, playing net stroke play on a course looking real good; not really showing any effects from the recent hot spell.

Speaking of hot, Glen Kinion shot a really nice 88, net 64, to take first place honors in the Men's B flight. Bob Thomas and Will Hart followed that with net 70 and 71, respectively.

In the Men's A flight, Dick Carlsen shot a net 66 with his round of 75, which was also the low gross for our group. Ray Alldritt, Jim Coombs and Greg Owyang filled out the rest of the winning slots in Men's A, netting 66, 70 and 71, respectively. Greg needed a back nine tie breaker to beat Haruo Makimoto who also netted 71.

In the Ladies flight, Jean Chong edged out Barbara Conerly, via back nine tie-breaker to grab first place. After Barbara, Marie Hart's net 73 took third by beating Shirley Johnson's 73 with the tie-breaker.

In the Closest to Pin competition, at hole # 8, Ron Glick won for Men's A flight with a shot of 17'4". Bob Thomas took the prize for Men's B group at 10'1" and Jean Chong was looking good for the ladies (well, OK, for all of us) getting it to 2'8". Good shooting all of you.

In the optional net skins game, there were only 4 skins among the 9 contestants. Ray Alldritt on #6; Ron McKenna on #10; and Bob Thomas scored two, on #15 and #16. All of these skins were net 2's.

Our next tournament is scheduled for August 14th, first tee at 7:27 AM. First come, first served, for 28 positions. Let me know. The format will be the same as this month. Hope to see you all there,

July 13, 2013 - Weekend Tournament Reults

Before I get into reporting the results of the BCGC Individual Net Weekend Tournament, I’d like to pass along kudos to the superintendent and maintenance staff of Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course.  In my opinion, the greens at Bartley were in the best condition that I’ve ever seen.  The greens were smooth and fast. Well-struck, full shots into the greens held.  And chips shots bounced, checked, and ran-out true.  Great job guys!

Speaking of smooth, three golfers in particular played very smooth rounds on Saturday.  Leading the pack was Bob Ruff who shot a gross 81 (40-41) for a first place net 64!  The day wasn’t extremely hot, but Mr. Ruff and his closest competitors sure were!  Running a close second was our Club President, Mark Edgar.  Mark posted gross nines of 39-37 (76) for a net 65!  Hot on Mark’s tail was Tim Ramirez with gross nines of 36-39 (75) for a net 66!  Fourth place went to George "Wolf" Yanez, shooting a terrific 38 on the back nine for a gross 83, net 69.

Complete results are as follows:

                                 Gross    Net
Bob Ruff                     81        64
Mark Edgar                  76        65
Tim Ramirez                75        66
George Yanez              83        69  (4th place by match of cards – back nine net)
Greg Leuterio               84        69  (5th place by match of cards – back nine net)
Wayne Urbani             82        69
Roy Jeske                    78        70
Bob Benefiel               79        73
Dave Travis                 94        73
Glen Kinion                 99        73

Dave Leuterio              76        74
Lonnie Podgorny         81        74
Jimmy Johnstone         102      76

Hole #5 – Mark Edgar @ 11’-3½”.
Hole #12 – Lonny Podgorny @ 23’-9”.

Our next tournament is scheduled for Saturday, August 10.  Format will be Individual Stroke Play, Net.  The NCGA Net Amateur qualifier is that day as well.  Entry into the qualifier is optional.  Hope to see you on the 10th!

June 19, 2013 - Midweek Group Tournament Results

This month we experimented with an earlier starting time for summer of 7:30 and it seemed to work well. All five foursomes finished by noon as the temperature rose from 60* to 85*. The skies were clear with only a slight breeze blowing just enough to keep us cool. The course is in fine shape with Morton Golf watering heavily at night and paying special attention to dry-spot locations from past years.

The game this month was a two-man team, best-ball net stroke play tournament. Coming in first place was the team of Jean Chong and Pat Mar with a nifty 89, net 61 round. Second place was secured (as determined by a card match of the last 6 holes)by Jim Coombs and Leon Taylor with a 77, net 62. John Hillerman and Dave Travis earned 3rd place honors also shooting 77, net 62. Finishing out of the money, but getting fifth place P.O.Y. points was the team of Bob Thomas and Dave Springer.

In the optional net skins game, 7 participants scored 11 skins as follows: Roy Fukushima, 2 at #’s 1 & 6; Bob Thomas, 2 at #’s 3 & 17, Haruo Makimoto at #9; John Hillerman, 3 at #’s 10,12 & 15; Dave Travis 2 at #’s 13 & 14; and Dave Springer at # 18.

In the closest to pin competition:
Kuniko Takeuchi won for the ladies with 16’-4” followed by Barbara Conerly at 27’-2”.
For the men, John Hawck led the way at11’-1”, just ahead of Leon Taylor’s 12’-5”.

Congratulations to all of our winners; thanks for playing. And thanks, too, to first time midweekers Alldritt, Hillerman, and Owyang. Welcome!!

Our next tournament, flighted individual stroke play, will be on July 17th, first tee time at 7:00AM as more hot weather is forecast. Hope to see you all there.
