TEE TALK - 1Q09 Edition

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - by Mark Edgar

Happy New Year!

I am looking forward to serving as President during 2009 golfing season. With a little effort from the board and our members, I have no doubt BCGC will be Devine in '09! To make this happen, the BCGC Board's Bold Goals for the year are to: simply provide the best tournaments, increase membership and foster fun and competitive golfing experience to all our active members.

Another goal is to bring home THE CUP from this year’s FREEPORT CUP. This year celebrates its 8th year and will be played where it started, at Bing Maloney. During this time frame, more than 540 players have competed with each other in fierce competition and in the end many friendships have been made. This is a fantastic format and this year will be no exception. Start practicing now to make the team of 16.

I would like to personally thank Kevin Schultz for his dedication and commitment in his leadership role during the last two years as President. If we did the math, I sure we would discover Kevin is one of our club’s most winning tournament champions during the last 9 years.

Lastly, I encourage you to invite your golfing friends, neighbors and co-workers to become 2009 BCGC members. You can also invite them out to play in our member guest tournaments to experience firsthand all the fun we will be having.

MIDWEEK TOURNAMENTS - By Jim Coombs

TEE IT UP WITH THE CAVANAUGH MIDWEEK GANG IN 2009

2008 proved to be an exciting year for the Midweek Gang. We had 30 different players throughout the season with an increased women’s field. Ron McKenna and Marie Hart won Player of the Year at the Christmas dinner. Ron played in every tournament and finished with 3100 points. Marie had 1800 points with Barbara Conerly 2nd and Shirley Johnson 3rd. In the men’s competition, Jim Coombs was 2nd, Mike McKenna 3rd, Roy Fukushima 4th, Kent Flewellyn 5th and Will Hart and Joe Kahoiwai tied for 6th.

The last event of the year, the TURKEY SHOOT scramble, had 24 players with Joe Kahoiwai and Myron Dahl and Barry Loncke and Jim Coombs tying for first. Stan Yamasaki and Roy Fukushima were 3rd, Will Hart and Mike McKenna 4th and Don Mar and Haru Makimoto 5th. In the women’s bracket, Barbara Conerly and Jeri Fong were 1st, Pat Mar and Jean Chong 2nd, Jo Clark and Trina Millett 3rd, and Diane Rose and Grace Yamasaki 4th. Closest to the hole were Haru Makimoto and Jeri Fong (5th hole) and Barry Loncke and Jo Clark (17th hole)

2009 should be an exciting year with new members joining, entertaining formats each month, and the great Cavanaugh golf course as a challenge. Everybody has a chance each month as we have two men’s flights (20 and under and 21 plus). We had 10 women play last year and hope to get at least two groups each month this year. Three of the top four men for Player of the Year had handicaps over 20, so everyone has a chance to place every month.

MARK THE 3RD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW. (Two exceptions APRIL 22 and MAY 13)

February 18 opens our new season with a 2-PERSON BEST BALL. Bring a friend (possible new member) and create your own twosome. On March 18, we play 6-6-6 (six hole best ball, six holes alternate shot, and six holes scramble) Again bring a friend and create your own twosome. April 22, (4th Wednesday) is our signature event of the year: FOUR CLUBS AND A PUTTER. This is a popular event; just pick the four clubs you will need to shoot a low round. On May 13 (2nd Wednesday),we will play the TAHOE-STABLEFORD format used at the Tahoe celebrity event each summer in July. In this format, you get plus points for pars, birdies and eagles. Last year Myron Dahl blew away the field with an outstanding front nine.

June 17, July15, and August 19, we play at 8:00 to beat the heat. September 16, we play PAR POINTS. October 14 and 21 will be the two-round MIDWEEK CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP for men and women. In 2008 Jim Coombs won low gross and Roy Fukushima won low new for the men, while Shirley Johnson won low gross and Barbara Conerly won low net for the women. Our last event of the year will be the ever popular TURKEY SHOOT SCRAMBLE on November 18. Everybody wins a prize.

WEEKEND TOURNAMENTS - by Kim Volk

2009 Bartley Cavanaugh Weekend News

Happy 2009 to all, hope the New Year will bring much luck and success to everyone on and off the golf course. This is my first year at being your weekend tournament chair, and I hope it’s a smooth transition for all. The 2009 season is almost here, and we are looking forward to a fun and exciting year.

We have 3 NCGA tournaments coming up for the weekend group. March is the 4 man best ball NCGA qualifier with the top 2 teams advancing to Spyglass for two rounds to represent our club. April is the NCGA 4 ball qualifier; the top team will advance to a regional qualifier and hopefully advance to Poppy Hills for 2 more rounds. July will be NCGA Net Am zone qualifier. With the top player advancing to a regional qualifier and hopefully advancing to Poppy Hills to represent Bartley Cavanaugh.

We have various and fun other tournaments throughout the year that will use both medal and team play. We have the Freeport Cup June 13th, where we compete against 3 other clubs. That will be a seeded tournament and is done by points. We also have some fun ones thrown in there. Six, Six, Six (First six two person best ball, second six alternate shot best ball, and third six a scramble) We will also have a 4 clubs and a putter tournament, with you picking your 4 best and your putter. Should be interesting! Also the ever popular Devil Ball and our Heave-Ho, if you weren’t there last year for that one, you don’t want to miss it!

To sign up for events please mail a check to me for $10, if it is a NCGA qualifier, and you want to participate in that it is an extra $25. You can mail the check to: Kim Volk 9836 Nature Trail Way Elk Grove, Ca. 95757. Please get it in 10 days prior to the event, this is very important, because there are reserved tee times, and we need to meet the deadline. If for some reason you can’t get the money in on time, email me with your info. kimavolk@gmail.com It’s has to be a for sure thing, or you will be charged. The course is really cracking down this year. I am looking forward to seeing everyone on the course. Please take the time to thank all your Board Members; they work very hard to run things smoothly!

Hit em’ straight!
