I remember my early days learning math. I was taught, 1=1, 1+1=2, 1+2=3, etc. But last Saturday, February 4, 2012, I experienced a brand new math revelation. At approximately 1:45 p.m. last Saturday, “.1” equaled 140. Yes, “.1”, which happened to be the winning margin in BCGC’s first weekend tournament of the year, the Member/Guest, Member/Member Scramble, Scotch, Best Ball Net tournament.
George Yanez and Wayne Urbani discuss pregame strategy.

The winning team of members George Yanez and Wayne Urbani bested the team of member Lonnie Podgorny and his guest Ramzi Salameh by the score of 59.8 to 59.9!! By winning, George and Wayne earned 400 Player of the Year (POY) points each, while Lonnie and Ramzi earned 260 points for their team’s second place finish. Hence, the 140 POY difference!

The field of 14 participants enjoyed a beautiful 64 degree day, with a gentle breeze from the north. That was just enough wind to make hole #15 (445 yd. par 4) play more like a par 4.9 than a par 5! (Whoa! That’s a “.1” difference again!). The tournament format; holes 1-6 Scramble, holes 7-12 Scotch, and holes 13-18 Best Ball Net, was a bit confusing, but fun, nonetheless. The interesting thing I observed during the round was how the demeanor of the playing partners changed as the format changed.

During the Scramble, where the scoring was best, everyone was laughing and talking to each other. During the Scotch, partners tended to be a bit subdued, or mumbling things under their breath, when facing a shot from the impossible place their partner put them! (All in fun, of course!). That’s why I placed the Best Ball Net format last, in the hopes that the partners would be talking to each other again at the end. That strategy appeared to have worked as everyone seemed to be enjoying discussing the round while in the clubhouse afterward.

Bottom line: Great day! Lots’ of fun! But most of all, good friends!

Wow! “.1”=140! Albert Einstein would be scratching his head! I had a great time in this tournament, and am looking forward to the next one on Saturday, March 3, 2012.
