2012 Match Play Championship

Here it is!

The long-awaited pairings for the 2012 Bartley Cavanaugh Match Play Championship! The attached bracket (no, NOT the March-Madness Bracket!) reflects the pairings and time-table for completing the matches.

Competitors will have the flexibility of scheduling their respective matches at the most convenient time as long as the match is completed by the noted deadline. I ask that the winner of each match contact me as soon as their match is completed in order for me to update the bracket timely and notify each competitor of who they will face in their next match.

Upon further review (no, this isn't a football replay) I have decided to extend the Match Play Schedule for the following reasons. The weather for the remainder of this week is forecast to be a bit unsettled. The weekend-after-next is Easter Weekend. The following Monday, April 9, is the scheduled day for greens aerification. Given that it will take a couple of weeks for the greens at Bartley Cavanaugh to recover, I have extended the completion date of the first round of match play to May 13th.

Subsequent completion dates for each round thereafter have been extended as well, and an updated Match Play Bracket has been attached for your information. In addition, to facilitate communication between players for scheduling matches, I have included everyone's email contact information as follows:

March 21, 2012 - Midweek Group - Bingo-Bango-Bongo

Wednesday proved to be a great day for golf at Bartley Cavanaugh. Temperatures warmed to 68 deg. by the end of play and the wind was just a gentle breeze at most. The midweek group played a game of Bingo-Bango-Bongo with individuals in each of the 5 threesomes playing for their share of that threesome's prize pool.

Don Sperling and Haruo Makimoto each accounted for 24 points to lead the men and Barbara Conerly led the women with 21 points. Barbara also shot a 95, net 70 to lead the women in scoring, while Dick Carlsen's 85 gross and Will Hart's net 65 led the men in scoring. Net scores will be used for P.O.Y. points.

After some rain leading up to the match, the course was dry and well maintained. Also in evidence were some new rakes in the bunkers and new ball washers too.

Sacramento Golf Hall of Fame to Induct Natalie Gulbis, David Sutherland & Angie Dixon

In an effort to recognize those who have shaped the game of golf in Sacramento, The First Tee of Greater Sacramento's Golf Hall of Fame has announced the honorees for 2012. This year's list is headed by LPGA luminary and Sacramento native, Natalie Gulbis, along with former PGA TOUR player David Sutherland, TFTGS executive director, Angie Dixon, and Volunteer Community awards to perennial volunteers Bob and Marilyn Hughes, and valued sponsor Bodycraft Collision Centers. The winners will recognized at an Induction Gala Friday, April 6, at The Crest Theatre in downtown Sacramento.

Activities open to the public include the Sacramento Golf Hall of Fame Golf Tournament on Friday, April 6 beginning at 10am. The entertaining Sutherland, current coach of Sacramento State's golf team, will conduct a clinic at 9am prior to the 10am tee time. Induction ceremonies at The Crest Theater begin at 6pm with refreshments followed by the awards presentation at 7pm.

"We are very excited to welcome home Natalie Gulbis who learned the game on Sacramento area golf courses," said Ken Morton, Jr., event committee member. "She and David Sutherland head a worthy group of individuals for this year's event."

TFTGS' Sacramento Golf Hall of Fame recognizes those individuals that had an everlasting impact on the landscape of golf in and around Sacramento. Tour players, club professionals, great amateur players and volunteers make up this unique list. The First Tee of Greater Sacramento helps children in our community live a better, more productive life by using the game of golf as a vehicle to instill The First Tee Nine Core Values, teach Life Skills, and together with the ANNIKA Foundation promote the Nine Health Habits.

Gulbis played in her first LPGA event as a fourteen year old amateur in 1997. She was the top player on the Granite Bay High School boy's golf team and accepted a golf scholarship to the University of Arizona, teaming with fellow freshman Lorena Ochoa. She turned professional in 2001 at 18 years of age and her first win came at the 2007 Evian Masters in France. She has played on three victorious U.S. Solheim Cup teams.

David Sutherland grew up playing golf at Haggin Oaks. He won the prestigious Western Amateur Championship and the 2001 Utah Classic as a professional. A veteran PGA Tour player, Sutherland competed in 215 PGA events and 83 Nationwide Tour tournaments during his 17 years on the circuit. A native of Carmichael, Sutherland recorded eight top 10 and 32 top 25 finishes on the PGA Tour. He oversees both the Hornet men's and women's golf teams.

As one of the original "Little Linkers," Angie Dixon credits SAY Golf for developing her passion for the game. That enthusiasm carried her on to a decorated amateur career, playing on the varsity boy's team at El Camino High School, receiving a full scholarship to the University of Washington, and reaching the semi-finals of the 1992 USGA Women's Public Links Championship. After graduation, Angie made golf her profession, serving as a teaching professional, playing on the LPGA Futures Tour, and coaching the Loretto High School girl's golf team for 15 seasons.

Since 2001, Dixon has worked for The First Tee of Greater Sacramento as the director of competitive activities, conducting a year round junior competitive program that incorporates The First Tee core values and life skills curriculum. In 2011, she was moved by the organization into her current position as executive director.

Also among the honorees are long time respected volunteers, Bob and Marilyn Hughes who have dedicated over 20 years serving the youth in the Sacramento area through golf council and TFTGS events and Bodycraft Collision Centers who will receive the community award for their longstanding partnership with and support of The First tee of Greater Sacramento.

This year's inductees will join a distinguished group of previous winners including Al Geiberger, Kevin Sutherland, Tom LoPresti, Walter Strand, Scott McCarron, and Ken Morton, Sr.

All proceeds from the fundraising event will underwrite the charitable programs of The First Tee of Greater Sacramento. The public is invited to play in the golf tournament at $250/person and attend the Induction Ceremony at $75/person or $25 for guests under 18 years of age.

March 3, 2012 - Weekend - 2 Person Best Ball

Saturday, March 3rd was a day of contrasts. It was warm, yet there were flurries. The weather was calm, but by contrast there was a flurry of activity on the golf course. It was a gorgeous day, temperature in the low-to-mid 70’s, no wind, warm sunshine. It made for perfect golf weather for the club’s combined member-member Best Ball tournament, NCGA Qualifier and Match Play Qualifier.

Competition in the Club’s Best Ball tournament was extremely close with the team of Kim Volk and Bob Thomas tying the team of Shawn Breakey and Greg Leuterio with net scores of 60. The tournament being decided by a match of scorecards on the back nine with the Volk/Thomas team firing a net 28 to the Breakey/Leuterio team’s 29. If either team would have tried qualifying for the NCGA Best Ball tournament, they would have easily beaten the team that did qualify.

That team was Mark Edgar and Bob Benefiel at a net 64 with Edgar shooting a sizzling 37 on the front and Benefiel with consistent nines of 37-37. The Edgar/Benefiel team will move on to Sectional Qualifying on May 24.

As noted earlier, participants in the Club’s tournament also qualified to move on to the Weekend Match Play Tournament. There were 16 qualifying spots available to the tournament’s participants. Since there were 16 players in the tournament, all players qualified to move on to Match Play. As is the normal process of seeding players for the Match Play, the individual who qualifies with the lowest score earns the #1 seed. Conversely, the individual with the highest score qualifies for the #16 seed. The #1 seed is always matched up with the #16 seed in the first-round match.

Dave "The Dodger" Spinger and brother Bryan
Consistent with the theme of contrasts, the #1 seed is Kim Volk, who shot her best round 90. Kim will play the #16 seed, Dave Springer, who admittedly played is worst round, but he won’t say what that was. The first-round match should be an exciting one as contrasted by the two competitor’s favorite baseball teams. Kim is a Giant fan, Dave is a Dodger fan. This match should be fun to watch as Kim and Dave may have a difficult time holding their clubs while wearing boxing gloves!

I will shortly be notifying all Match Play participants of who their upcoming opponents will be.

The next Weekend tournament will be held on April 22, two weeks after the spring greens aerification. This tournament will also be a Best Ball of Partners BCGC tournament as well as the NCGA Zone Qualifier.

Closest to Pin #8 – Wayne Urbani 188 ¾ inches.
