March 3, 2012 - Weekend - 2 Person Best Ball

Saturday, March 3rd was a day of contrasts. It was warm, yet there were flurries. The weather was calm, but by contrast there was a flurry of activity on the golf course. It was a gorgeous day, temperature in the low-to-mid 70’s, no wind, warm sunshine. It made for perfect golf weather for the club’s combined member-member Best Ball tournament, NCGA Qualifier and Match Play Qualifier.

Competition in the Club’s Best Ball tournament was extremely close with the team of Kim Volk and Bob Thomas tying the team of Shawn Breakey and Greg Leuterio with net scores of 60. The tournament being decided by a match of scorecards on the back nine with the Volk/Thomas team firing a net 28 to the Breakey/Leuterio team’s 29. If either team would have tried qualifying for the NCGA Best Ball tournament, they would have easily beaten the team that did qualify.

That team was Mark Edgar and Bob Benefiel at a net 64 with Edgar shooting a sizzling 37 on the front and Benefiel with consistent nines of 37-37. The Edgar/Benefiel team will move on to Sectional Qualifying on May 24.

As noted earlier, participants in the Club’s tournament also qualified to move on to the Weekend Match Play Tournament. There were 16 qualifying spots available to the tournament’s participants. Since there were 16 players in the tournament, all players qualified to move on to Match Play. As is the normal process of seeding players for the Match Play, the individual who qualifies with the lowest score earns the #1 seed. Conversely, the individual with the highest score qualifies for the #16 seed. The #1 seed is always matched up with the #16 seed in the first-round match.

Dave "The Dodger" Spinger and brother Bryan
Consistent with the theme of contrasts, the #1 seed is Kim Volk, who shot her best round 90. Kim will play the #16 seed, Dave Springer, who admittedly played is worst round, but he won’t say what that was. The first-round match should be an exciting one as contrasted by the two competitor’s favorite baseball teams. Kim is a Giant fan, Dave is a Dodger fan. This match should be fun to watch as Kim and Dave may have a difficult time holding their clubs while wearing boxing gloves!

I will shortly be notifying all Match Play participants of who their upcoming opponents will be.

The next Weekend tournament will be held on April 22, two weeks after the spring greens aerification. This tournament will also be a Best Ball of Partners BCGC tournament as well as the NCGA Zone Qualifier.

Closest to Pin #8 – Wayne Urbani 188 ¾ inches.
